Panel Discussion on the theme “Scouting and Parliamentary Roles in Synergizing Efforts in Response to Global Challenges”



On Tuesday, 13 November 2018, at 13.30-15.15 hours, at Saladaeng Room, Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok, Hon. General Worapong Sanganetra, member of the National Legislative Assembly of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Ahmad Rusdi, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand and Permanent Representative to ESCAP and Mr. Juan Reig, member of the World Scout Executive Committee joined to the panel discussion as panelists on the theme “Scouting and Parliamentary Roles in Synergizing Efforts in Response to Global Challenges” and Ms. Krisanee Masrichan, Director of Bureau of Foreign Languages , the Secretariat of the House of Representatives and Mr. Adoonrat Nimjaroen from the National Scout Organization of Thailand were moderators. The participants were member countries of WSPU, WOSM, scouts from Vajiravudh College and National Scout Organization of Thailand including scouts from the Program of Democratic Leadership Development for Youth through Scout Movement by Hon. Mr. Surachai Liengboonlertchai, First-Vice President of the National Legislative Assembly 30 participants in total. The participants attending the panel had experiences from presentation by Hon. General Worapong Sanganetra, member of National Legislative Assembly, who presented on the topic of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX to achieve SDGs by giving examples of some projects which already had achieved SDGs. The participants were very interested in the projects and would implement to the scouting in their countries. H.E. Mr. Ahmad Rusdi, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand and Permanent Representative to ESCAP, presented the scouting roles in achieving SDGs through activities such as gender equality, peace, diversity, environment and disaster and emergency situations. Furthermore, Parliament can support scouting by enacting the laws and budget planning. As for Mr. Juan Reig, member of the World Scout Executive Committee, presented that member countries of the United Nations already had adopted SDGs since 2015 for having a better world. Therefore, scouting should be put into practice to reach these goals as well and suggested that parliamentarians should establish a clear framework of scouting activities such as providing more resources for scout camping and learning from nature to protect the world since some countries still have these obstacles. Moreover, parliamentarians should exchange views with scout organizations especially the youth scouting to listen to what they need
